Is the Government Still Falling Into Rigathi Gachagua’s Trap?

Is the Government Still Falling Into Rigathi Gachagua’s Trap?

Kenya’s political arena is heating up again—and at the center of it all is former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Despite being impeached and politically isolated, Gachagua has refused to fade into silence. Instead, he has bounced back with a new party and a renewed mission: to shake the system and keep himself at the center of national politics.

The Trap Was Always Set
Gachagua didn’t just stumble into this spotlight—he orchestrated it. By launching the Democratic Citizens Party (DCP), he sent a strong message: he is not done with politics. He is regrouping, rebranding, and rearming himself for the next phase of his political journey.

He knew that such a bold move would provoke the state. He knew the government, still unsettled by his influence in the Mt. Kenya region, would come for him. And that's exactly what happened.

Gatanga: The Near Arrest That Backfired
Just yesterday, in a dramatic twist, Gachagua held a public rally in Gatanga, where DCI officers had reportedly been deployed to arrest him. In what felt like a political thriller, he managed to slip through the dragnet and escape to Nairobi—once again dodging the system while cementing his image as a persecuted leader.

But here’s the question: why is the government helping him become more popular?

Turning Persecution into Power
Every move the state makes against Gachagua only adds fuel to his fire. Arrest threats, political isolation, public ridicule—it all plays into his narrative of resistance. Many Kenyans see him as a victim of political betrayal, especially after his impeachment. And now, with his new party, he’s positioning himself as the voice of the marginalized and the silenced.

Whether you love him or loathe him, you can’t ignore him.

All Attention is Valuable
Gachagua understands modern politics better than many give him credit for. In an age driven by headlines and hashtags, there is no such thing as bad publicity. Every news story, every attempt to arrest him, every press statement against him—all of it keeps him relevant.

By attacking him, the government is not silencing him. They’re amplifying him.

Conclusion: Who’s Really in Control?
It’s becoming clear that the state might be falling into a carefully laid political trap. Gachagua wanted this attention. He thrives on controversy, on drama, on conflict. With his new party gaining traction and the state helping to keep his name in the news, he may well be laying the groundwork for a comeback.

If the government truly wants to neutralize his influence, it might be time to stop playing his game—and start playing their own.
